New anticoagulant Xarelto could be on the verge of mass tort, according to lawyers examining patient claims. The blood thinner has already been linked to an increased risk of severe side effects, including hemorrhaging, deep vein thrombosis, hematoma, and other severe side effects.
Some lawyers have claimed to have received hundreds of cases from across the country alleging that Xarelto caused serious injuries. Lawyers are drawing similarities between Xarelto and Pradaxa, a similar blood thinner which resulted in a $650 million settlement for patients injured by the drug.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently ordered drug makers Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson to conduct safety trials to determine the Xarelto’s potential risks. At least 183 deaths have been attributed to Xarelto, and at least 890 hospitalizations from Xarelto side effects.
