A new study has found that anticoagulant rivaroxaban — marketed as Xarelto by Janssen Pharmaceuticals — has an increased risk of gastrointestinal tract bleeding in elderly patients compared to other blood thinners. The study will be released in the BMJ and reviewed more than 90,000 patients.
Study researchers suggest caution when prescribing Xarelto to patients, particularly those over the age of 75, due to an increased risk of internal bleeding in that population. Additionally, the drug does not contain a natural antidote, which makes bleeding difficult to stop once it starts.
Xarelto has been linked to nearly 2,000 adverse events since it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, including internal bleeding, blood clots, heart attack, stroke and death. Several Xarelto lawsuits have alleged that Janssen failed to properly warn patients and doctors of the risks of severe Xarelto side effects.
