Xarelto Spinal Bleeding
Xarelto carries the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) severe label warning for spinal bleeds, specifically the most dangerous spinal bleeds—epidural or spinal hematomas. Hematomas (pools of blood occurring outside blood vessels) in the spine can cause permanent paralysis.
A patient may be at greater risk for spinal bleeding if they:
- use epidural catheters,
- use NSAIDs or platelet inhibitors,
- have previous spinal trauma, and/or
- have undergone spinal surgery.
